Icons
Making icons is really not that hard, but there is so many different ways you can make them. In this tutorial I will explain the basic way to make an icon.
Step 1: The first thing you have to do is to find a picture you like and think will make a nice icon. I've chosen this photo: (click to enlarge)
Step 2: Then open it in Paint Shop Pro, and click on the crop tool, which looks like this: 
. Then make sure the settings on the top has the same number of pixels both in width and height (it doesn't have to say 100x100, which is the size of icons, we can resize it afterwards.)
Step 3: Here's how my picture looks when I've marked the area I want to use:
Step 4: When you're happy with it, click on the apply button on the top tool line, which looks like this:
. Then the dark aera of the picture will disappear.
Step 5: As you may already know, the size of an icon is 100x100. So I have to resize the picture, to do this click Image >> Resize....
Step 6: A new window will appear, here you hav to make the size 100x100px.
Step 7: Now your picture will have the same size as an icon, and you can maybe add some borders, maybe some text or brushes and your icon is done. Here's how mine turned out after I've added some effects:
