ABOUT DEGUS
Not many people know what a degus is, so first I will tell you some facts about them.
Degus is small animals originally from Chile, were they live together in big groups. In wild life they can be up to 10 years old, but In captivity they can only be around 6. Degus looks like a mix of a squirle and a desert rat (if that is the correct word?).
When a degus gets pragnent she carries the babies in her tummy for three whole months. They can get about 2-5 babies at a time. It takes approximately 45 minuites to deliver just one baby.
When the babies are born they can see, they have fur all over and you can see the gender immediately. The reason why they are so good developed is because they are in the stomach for so long.
One thing about degus that is a little creepy is that they can loose their tail. It is sort of a defence mechanism. When they loose the tail it woun't grow back out. None of my degus has lost their tail, thank God!
OUR DEGUS
We got our first degus right after I moved to Kragerø. The summer of 2006. We actually wanted them to get a lot of babies so we bought one boy and one girl. We named them Dolly and Ferdinand.
We had a great year with just the two of tem and then right before summer of 2007 they got their first set of babies. Dolly gave birth to 5 beautiful small degus babies.
Unfortunatly Dolly killed two of the babies for some weird reason (we still don't know why). It was really sad! Then we gave two of them to a pet store in Asker and kept the last one, Snuppa. Snuppa is really special. When you hold her she is so calm and it looks like she is really comfortable with us.
Three months later Dolly gave birth to three new babies. We actually thought she would get more than three because of her size, but I guess we were wrong. This time two girls and one boy. We knew we had to give the boy away, so when he was old enough Jan Christopher took him to the pet shop. I was at work so I didn't know, that was best. I hate giving them away, it is really sad.
Of course we kept the two twin girls. Thay are so curious and full of energy. We haven't given them a name yet. We just refer to them as the twins;)
2+1+2=5 We now had five degus. One boy and four girls. It was time to take the boy to a vet before he could get any of his babies pregnant. It was too late. Before we managed to get him to the vet he had already made Dolly pregnant a third time and Snuppa. Dolly got two more babies December 5 2007. Then Snuppa gave birth to six healthy babies the night before Christmas. Three boys and three girls.
When the time comes we have to give them all away. We do not have room in the cage for 13 degus. Eventhough we love them so much<3
